If you're having trouble with your water dispenser or ice maker, it could be time to replace your refrigerator's water line. The refrigerator's water line transports cold, tap water from your sink to various parts of the appliance, including the ice maker and water dispenser.
A refrigerator's water line is typically made of one of three materials, copper, braided steel and plastic. Each material has its pros and cons, so it's important to choose the right one for your specific appliance.
Copper Tubing
The most durable refrigerator water lines are those made of copper. This metal is rust-resistant and does not alter the flavor of the water or ice, so it's suitable for many kitchen applications.
Braided Steel Tubing
The next most common refrigerator water line material is braided steel tubing, which is a dependable and affordable option for home use. However, it can be more difficult to work with than copper and may kink easily.
Plastic Tube
The last of the three popular refrigerator water line materials is plastic tubing, which is less expensive and easier to work with than copper. It also doesn't rust or kink easily, but some homeowners report that it leaves a weird flavor in the water and ice.
Before installing the fridge's new water line, plan out the route you want the tubing to run along and secure it with cable clamps in cabinets and along floor joists. This will prevent the tubing from snagging and tearing when the fridge is moved around.
